Wonderful Worthing!

Posted on 17 June 2007

For better tomorrowsWell, it’s been a while since I’ve posted with the Green Girls – which I’m mostly putting down to the upheavals of moving into our very own first house!

Yep, we’ve moved from renting in our beloved Brighton and Hove to home owning in wonderful Worthing.

Just another 20 mins down the train tracks means a significant drop in house prices so we’re sure we won’t be the first – even if it feels a little like it at the moment!

Moving to a new area these days means much more than just working out where your nearest takeaway and local post office is (if there is one of course – but that’s another subject…!).  You need to know where your new council has got to with green… What do they recycle? When? How can you keep your commute carbon free? And what about compost?

So we were pleasantly surprised to find as we stepped over the threshold of our new abode that West Sussex County Council had anticipated our eco asks with a handy little booklet entitled, ‘For better tomorrows’.  Covering everything from saving water to subsidies for real nappies, conserving energy to composting virtually everything, it’s a great green guide to the area.

So far we’ve got our recycling sorted (much quicker than in our old place and a weekly collection rather than a fortnightly one) and now we have to investigate the composting – especially as we actually have a back garden!

But what do we want? A 220 litre Composter Converter, a Green Cone, or a Green Johanna – or one of each?! Need to look into this a little further I think…any advice much appreciated! That’s all for now but I can see these posts being dominated by eco house queries for some time to come…

Take care,

Katie

    Katie,

What you say about the considerations we now need to make when moving house is so true.

When we moved here nearly 6 years ago as first time buyers, quite honestly, our main concerns were whether we could afford it and if it was close to the jobs we had then.

If we were looking to move now we wouldn’t chose this location, this type of house or even this city (Nottingham) because our lifestyles and priorities have changed so much.

It sounds like Worthing is lovely and definitely on the ball when it comes to providing for its eco-conscious residents. Keep us posted with what else is happening there!
