thoughts on increasing waste awareness

Posted on 22 September 2008

The other day when I was downtown Copenhagen I saw this :

it’s a transparent container. I think it would rock if we could actually see our trash at all times, so it isn’t hidden away somewhere in the supply chain of the world.

I found something similar in a blogpost today which is a rubbish around the busshelter sign

Wouldn’t you think that if we could actually see our waste, we would relate to it more ? I love the idea of transparent trash!…

Seeing pictures of landfill has a jarring effect on me and certainly makes me think about how I’m contributing to it and how I could keep more waste out of it. So I reckon transparent bins could have that effect too.

I completely agree with Vicky. Except I don’t see it, I smell it. You always know when you’re driving by the dump. Not that I’m saying we need a scratch and sniff trash can, but transparent is a good step.

This is a great post and I love the blog as well!
Back in June I decided to do a “30 day no trash challenge”. For 30 days I tried to make no (or as little possible) trash and blog about it almost daily.
The blog generated an interest from others to take on the challenge themselves. So for the last 4 months we have had a different author every month blogging about their own “30 day no trash challenge”. It is such a great way to gain awareness in how truly wasteful we can be and also helps us to be more mindful of what we use and throw away.
My hope is to continue the challenge for a full year and keep it growing. I would love for you to take a look and maybe help us find other people who want to take the challenge. Unfortunately we don’t have anyone for October but I will continue to post and hopefully some one will step up for November.
It is disgusting how wasteful we have become and this is the small thing I could do to be a little less trash guilty. ;)
