Thought and (action) for the day - Green Energy Providers

Posted on 15 May 2007

I thought Kate’s post earlier in the week about using local milk delivery called ‘Thought and (action) for the day’ was an excellent idea. It prompted me to shamelessly steal it and write a post in the same vein about something I’ve been thinking about.

Wind TurbineWe’ve been using Ecotricity as our green electricity provider for a couple of years now. Ideally we would like to use a company like Good Energy because their electricity is 100% renewable and Ecotricity’s is closer to around 30%. However, when looking for a green electricity provider we asked for quotes from both companies and decided that we simply couldn’t afford Good Energy’s prices just yet.

The reason that we can afford Ecotricity however is because they match the standard price of the suppliers of conventional electricity sources in your region (in the UK). Then, with their customers’ money they invest in building more and more turbines so they can increase the amount of green energy they can supply. Additionally, I have just recently noticed that they are now offering a 100% green tariff called ‘New Energy Plus’ with just a 5% premium over their regular ‘New Energy’ tariff. This seems way too good to be true, I’m going to check that out.

I can very easily understand how switching to a green electricity provider can be prohibitively expensive for some people. With the best will in the world there are some things you just can’t afford, but since using Ecotricity I haven’t found a huge difference in our Electricity bills (of course I don’t know if all of their customers have had the same experience). This makes me wonder why anyone wouldn’t want to make the switch, if it costs the same then why not?

Ecotricity isn’t the only green electricity provider out there, the number of options are growing all the time. Check them out, ask them for a quote and find one which suits your needs and your bank account.
