the new chemical law in the EU (REACH)

Posted on 20 December 2006

The new chemical law in the EU (called REACH) was approved upon by the european parliaments members.

The initial goal was to protect the consumers from dangerous chemicals - BUT it ended up like a “damage control” against the powerful chemical industry.

The minimum requirements was that there should be a list of alternatives to secure us from the dangerous chemicals which are found in the clothes, food and furniture around us.

However the legislation doesn’t demand a lot from the chemical industry - it is the chemical companies themselfes that needs to regulate their chemicals and it’s themselves that needs to find “less dangerous” alternatives.

Read more here or search for “WWf REACH” on the net ( I have translated some of the text from the danish pressrelease of WWF about REACH)

Sorry, - but excuse me ? shouldn’t the European Parliament be able to list demands of chemicals that is NOT wanted in our surroundings ? and they are letting the chemical companies regulate it themselves?.
Now is it just me - or does everyone else around here know how this is going to work out ? dangerous chemical companies regulating themselves, OHH please !

cough.. lobbyism.. cough
