Recovering Fashionistas Taking Green to a New Level

The Great American Apparel DietThe Great American Apparel Diet, no limits on portion size!   Wear as much as you like (as long as it’s not new).  Devour your closet until you are satisfied, not stuffed.  Chomp through your drawers until you are brimming not bloated.   Within days you will feel lighter, brighter and more confident.  In one small year (that’s 365 days, 8760 hours) you will be satiated without the unwanted weight of debt, overstuffed closets and apparel hangovers.  Start September 1st—your wallet and your sanity will thank you.

The Great American Apparel Diet, what is it?  We are a group of women who have decided to go on a diet of sorts.  A fast really.  We are completely eliminating any “new apparel” from our diets for one year.   Yes, the next time you see any of us sporting new togs it will be Sept. 2, 2010.  Sound easy?  Well think again.  This is going to be a stretch for most of us.  You see, like most women we are atttached to our wardrobes in some form or another.  In fact buying a new something-or-other is as natural as a dark choclate pick-me-up.  We all have our reasons for embarking on this project but it all gets down to this…who are we without any new something-or-others in our closets?  We shall see.

What you can and cannot consume on the Great American Apparel Diet

Let’s first discuss the things you can guzzle without guilt:

1. Clothes currently in your closet, on hooks, in your drawers or on your floors.  Go crazy, gobble them up as long as they are not new.  Allow me to dissect the semantics of the word “new.”  New is anything thing that resembles a complex carbohydrate (something you pay for).  An item is “not new,” if it something a person gives you.  Now, this can be complicated for you late night snackers who don’t think midnight calories count.  Do not, you can not write a check to your husband or best friend and give them instructions or a wish list for your “must haves.”  Those calories do count and technically once you go there you’re off the wagon and you’re likely to roll chubb-ily downhill.

2. Footwear (technically boots that morph into a skirt are suspect and are considered apparel).

3. Accessories.  I will refer to Webster on this one:  Noun: an article or set of articles of dress, as gloves, earrings, or a scarf, that adds completeness, attractiveness, etc. to one’s basic outfit.

4. Underwear—every girl should have a great pair of underwear on at all times and I will say no more.

Now let’s discuss those nasty items that are sure to leave you bloated and disgusted with yourself:

1. New clothes, the ones you pay money for (this includes outerwear, athletic wear and Halloween costumes).

The new season for your wardrobe? It’s green, not winter!

Tags: , ,

So you’re back from some wonderful Mediterranean holiday, and can’t bear to part from your linen frocks and jewel sandals. Sadly though, September is just around the corner, some things will have to go, and some other come back out.

Surely, the thought of tackling your wardrobe for the turn of season is not exciting – probably just because nobody showed you the liberating and rewarding side of it.

How about getting to the bottom of it – and rediscovering some long-forgotten pieces that might just do for you again. How about freeing some space from useless, no longer wearable items and making your closet look like a boutique – well organised and displayed, only you are the exclusive customer, and everything comes right in your size!

Rewardrobe logo
Still don’t know where to start? Just get an expert to do it for you. That’s right. Wardrobe management can be just for you – gone are the days where it was a whim for rich shopaholics and celebrities.

So much so that Rewardrobe, the latest Wardrobe Management and Image Consultancy in London, actually are Slow Wear advisors. Far from the spending excesses of fad-following fashionistas, they will actually encourage you to make the most of your existing wardrobe, weeding it until everything that’s left is perfect on you, and then styling it to match your true personal image.

Feel guilty about shopping now? Not at all – Rewardrobe will give you a fulfilling and rewarding experience, not make you feel guilty about your choices.

You can say yes to more shopping, only with a different approach. Rewardrobe’s aim is to give you a new awareness, and work with you towards a more responsible style. So your shopping will never again be on an impulse, but you will go for quality materials, ethical labels, natural fibres and brands that come with a guarantee for sustainable sources / fair-trade practices / quality trademarks.

Rewardrobe hanger image
And that’s not all. When you finally have that much needed wardrobe weeding, what are you going to do with the pieces you no longer want? Rewardrobe can help you here, too. With their thorough Upcycle scheme, all your items will be given a second lease of life – donated to trusted charitable organisations, swapped, or recycled. Rewardrobe do not believe in dumping! The most innovative option is to give some pieces away to some of London’s quirkiest young designers, who work on reconstructed fashion and will accept textiles to incorporate them into their creative process.

And all those beautiful things actually left in your newly styled wardrobe? We surely want you to make the most of them – treating them with care all the way through. That’s why Rewardrobe can advise you on the most delicate natural detergents, the best traditional methods to wash and avoid chemical dry cleaning, the most efficient tips for seasonal and daily clothes storage, and lots more.

So yes, we might be going for winter, but how about the rewarding feeling of starting the new season with a new, spotless, and sustainable ‘slow wear’ wardrobe? That would almost make me yearn for my scarf and gloves!

US green fashion retailer Greenloop is asking “Are you the next green girl?“. They’re hosting the first ever green fashion model competition this autumn.

Project Green Search advertThe Mission

The ethos behind the Project Green Search competition is to inspire people to think about how to align their careers with the environmental, social and humanitarian ethics, serving as a platform to connect mission driven people with sustainable businesses and organizations in the modeling, spokesperson, design, fashion, talent, entertainment and arts arenas.

A whole range of green living experts, environmental activists, celebrities and eco-fashion industry leaders are supporting this project including Lu Magazine, friend of Green Girls Global Eco Chick and the green model queen herself Summer Rayne Oakes.

Entries & Rules

Entries for the competition are being accepted until Friday 16th September. From 17th September the public will be able to view candidates online and vote for their favourite 10. The lucky final 10 will then be invited to Portland on 25th September where they will take part in a photo shoot, interview and runway walk. The finalist competition will take place during Portland Fashion Week 7th – 11th October 2009.

All Search contestants will be required to give 10 hours volunteer time to an environmental group.

Candidates must be at least 17 years of age (there is no upper age limit) and be a resident of the U.S. No previous modelling experience is required but you must be able to attend Portland Fashion Week.

Hemprose Earthy and Sensual

Tags: ,

The Hemprose Collection is a small collection but one that is unique.

Hemprose clothingMost people do not realise that cotton is the most heavily sprayed crop in the world.  The reason I became interested in using hemp is because hemp is a weed and can be grown anywhere.  It does not need pesticides because bugs don’t like it.  Also it does not need to be heavily irrigated.  The Dry Tears of the Aral Sea explains why hemp is the crop of the future.  There is a link on my site, it is a UN Report.  It explains that in the 60′s an entire sea dried up in Russia because of cotton farming leaving a pit of toxins.  Once I read this, I had to find an alternative.

T-shirts are something that no one can do without.  I like to be as eco conscience as possible and mostly buy my clothes second hand, but sometimes a good t-shirt is a must.  I designed The Rockdress/Nitie, because it is so versitile.  It’s so soft you will want to wear it to bed, because it looks amazing over jeans or a swim suit.  It fits so well and hugs you in all the right places, this makes it flattering to all figures.  So well designed it shows off curves.  Nursing mums also love it. Nighties are normally too frilly or too sexy, this one is super cool. It is also priced well, so that everyone can try one.  The good thing about hemp, is it last for ages.  It washes so well, and always keeps it shape.  The Green Parent featured it this month and loves it, called it “scrumptious”!

Hemprose shortiesThe shortie collection called Starlet by Hemprose, is super cute.  Designed, dyed and sewn by hand in the UK.  The shorties are like French knickers, and again very versatile, they will look great at the beach or really sweet as shorties to wear to bed with a little vest.  Teenage girls love the look, and mums look good in them too!

I haven’t left out the Hemperor, and have a very comfortable light weight long sleeve t-shirt for men. Yoga Magazine endorsed it and was impressed with the design, said it is great for exercise but looks good too.

I hope you like this collection, and keep checking back, it’s always evolving.

Thanks for looking.
