What name do you give a whale? Mister Splashy Pants of course!
For those who are wondering what I am talking about, cast your minds back to my post titled A whale by any other name…in October, when I reported that Greenpeace had launched a competition to name a whale.
Apparently over 11,000 submissions were entered, which were narrowed down to 30 and then it was up to the public to vote. Of those 30 short listed names, 150,000 (over 78 percent) voted Mister Splashy Pants as their favourite.
However now that the humpback whale has been named, he needs your help! He might have a great name but he and his friends are still in danger. The only way to be 100 percent sure that ‘Splashy’ doesn’t get harpooned is to stop killing all whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

Come on GGG readers let’s save Splashy Pants !

Thanks for that Anna-Lisa, I have just signed the petition and signed up for my free whale newsletter too. Other readers out there might be interested in a children’s book called ‘Dear Greenpeace’ by Simon James about a whale stranded in a little girls pond in her backgarden. It’s one of my favourite picture books and the children I used to teach loved it. It would make a fantastic Christmas present for any child aged between 4-7 and makes for a lovely read if you are a grown up too. I recommend sneaking into your local bookshop for a quick read.

Kate, its fantastic that you have signed the petition and signed up to the whale newsletter. I absolutely adore whales, I find these gigantic mamals fascinating especially how they communicate with each other. The ‘Dear Greenpeace’ books sounds great, the only kids I know are my two very young cousins (3 and 1 yrs old) I might get it for them and engage them into marine consrvatiion from a young age.
JLB – Thanks for the nomination, will be checking your blog out too and the other nominations
