The future looks bright. I think that clothing companies that work hard to do things right like nvohk are worthy of the praise and helpful IT hints like this can only hope to make their effort more and environmentally conscious. I can't wait to see this line develop and see the input of its members create something whole and original.

Not all servers emit millions of tonnes of CO2 Adam. Our Green Hosting (http://www.green-hosting.co.uk) is run on renewable energy and there are more and more such hosting options popping up all the time.

So, website owners do have the choice to make a lower impact with their sites.

Plus if you use a renewable electricity source which will power your computer that will make another big difference.

Interesting post Courtenay. I agree that the web's one of our best bets for 'going green', but for a different reason to yours -- I think it's its social networking powers and ability to help people act collectively will help us.

However, I completely disagree with the notion that the web allows us to never have to 'waste natural resources'. Sadly that's just not true -- our computers and the servers that run our websites have to run on something, and that something is mostly fossil fuels. UK data centres alone emit millions of tonnes of CO2 per year, contributing to climate change (see Smart Planet
and we're running another piece at SmartPlanet this morning on the same subject).
