Governor Schwarzenegger wants to brings Sexyback to Enviromentalism!

Posted on 12 April 2007

So our governor wants to bring the sexyback to the environmental movement!

He spoke recently at our nation’s capital regarding how we can intice more people to focus on environmental issues by making it “hip and sexy”!  He used the bodybuilding industry, an area he is extremely familiar with, as an analogy:

[Weight-lifting was once considered a pursuit for weirdos, he said, carried out in dungeon-like gyms by people embarrassed to admit to doing it.

But with positive marketing "it became mainstream, it became sexy, attractive, and this is exactly what has to happen with the environmental movement", he said. (BBC.com)]

And speaking of muscles he also told the crowd about how he was recently a guest on MTV’s show Pimp My Ride.  They turned a Chevy Impala into a fierce biodiesel muscle car!  vroom, vroom

Although I like the Governor’s stance on the issue, it’s not a big revelation.  Sex sells is Marketing 101! Wait – I know some of you may think I’m missing the point, I’m not, I get what Arnold was really saying, its just we have been saying this all a long!  Most enviromentalists I know aren’t your stereotypical dippy hippies, and this is coming from someone who lives in San Francisco-home of the original hippy!  They are instead well dressed, articulate, polished, eco-minded citizens.  High-end luxury has long started going green and last year green was the new black…..the Governor means well, he really does, and I get the point he was trying to make, but in the words of musical artist Prince to another MTV crowd,”I’m here to tell you sexy never left.”

declaring myself an anti-consumerist ! by Henriette on July 30th, 2008
august is my first "no consumption month" for me - I have taken up a challenge from a book I bought so I can't get any more stuff in august at least (I bet my husband is real happy for that).

Hahahahaha you made my day with that hilarious (and quite dishy) photo of Schwarzenegger! Like you, I live in California and am used to the staid photos of him in a suit and tie. Anyway, I agree that green is already chic; I would peg the Sexiness of Green to have descended sometime last year.

Glad my fellow California girl posted on this–I was about to… I also caught this “Earth Day Edition” of Pimp my Ride.

A little rarar from me: Watching that episode, I felt as though I had spent the last 10 years waiting for the mainstream to embrace energy alternatives and the FACT of global climate change. After watching Xzibit pimp out that Impala, I wanted to take it back. ALL BACK.

I mean, for all the good greeniess that was attempted in that episode, they didn’t offer the average consumer any really compelling reason to use or advocate for availability of alternative fuels or alternative fuel cars. And in the end, it was a very “have your cake and eat it, too”–instead of saying something substantial about the fundamental things that might need to change about cars and transportation.

    So, you know. Rar.
