Eco-Arguments

Posted on 01 December 2006

Anna Shepard, Eco-Worrier of The Times has written a brilliant post which I’m sure we can all relate to, the eco-argument.

Do you ever have those times when you and your partner or the people you live with just can’t see eye to eye on a green point? It’s not too bad in our house, we both turn the lights off in rooms were not using, don’t waste too much water, love the composter and recycle to our hearts content. However, one real sticking point is plastic bags. For any of you who read my post on City Hippy you’ll know I’m a bag addict but hate the plastic variety.

My People Tree tote bagI love taking my own tote bags to the shop to get our supplies and aside from anything they’re much stronger. My partner will go along with this (kind of) if we’re going shopping together but will find all sorts of reasons why they’re not up to the job. If he goes shopping alone he’s sure to return with the dreaded plastic bag. Why the resistance you might ask? Well although he won’t admit it, I think he thinks my tote bags are a bit girlie, with their bright colours and flowery patters. Usually the argument goes something like this…

Me: Why can’t you take my tote bags to get the shopping?

Him: I forgot and besides they’re not big enough.

Me: You won’t look silly with them and besides I WILL NOT have more carrier bags in this house!

Him: Nothing

Read through the ‘I say’ – ‘he / she’ says comments on Anna’s post to give yourself a giggle and to remind you that you’re not alone.

    Hello Vicky!

yes, i do dread the plastic bags too; and endeavour as much as i can to go out with bag.
I’ve got a few possible solutions for this partner-plastic bag issue:
    1. Get him to use his rucksack – makes shoulders strong and doesn’t elongate the arms disproportionately!
    2. if he does not have one: check sativa.com, they make a whole variety of bags made of hemp; which is a very strong durable material; and these bags look cool, not girlie (my boyfriend likes them)
    3. I think i’m going to the next fair trade fair in londont this week-end; i can have a look for a masculine tote bag! (in blue and green shades??)
    all the best
