Green homes in Sheffield

Posted on 19 April 2007

No, I haven’t moved from Sheffield but I was a student there and stayed on to work for a couple of years afterwards.  I saw in Hippy Shopper this week that 47 eco-homes are being constructed in the Norfolk Park area.  Residents will have great access to the tram system and spectacular views across the [...]

Six Cities Design Festival

Posted on 05 April 2007

Yesterday I went to an exhibition in Edinburgh for the Six Cities Design Festival, all about furniture for ‘living in motion’.  It’s at the City Art Centre and is definitely worth a look. The festival is taking place across Scotland’s six cities (funnily enough…).  In Inverness the focus will be sustainable design.  I’m very tempted [...]

New t-shirts!

Posted on 28 February 2007

Yay, Tonic has finally produced a v-neck, ethical organic t-shirt for us green girls who prefer that cut (even if it only seems to be in a small size). It’s been a bugbear of mine for ages that ethical/fairtrade/organic clothing shops don’t do many v-neck tops but things are definitely improving. I even own a [...]

Green candles

Posted on 26 February 2007

For a while I’ve been trying to stick to buying natural wax candles, with a fairly good degree of success.  According to the New Scientist, they are better for us and for the planet.  The other week I bought a petroleum wax candle in a sale and I really did notice the difference, more smoky [...]

Edinburgh gets greener

Posted on 15 February 2007

According to the Evening News, more homes have applied for grants towards renewable energy projects than in anywhere else in Scotland. The Scottish Community and Householder Renewables Initiative have awarded around £450,000 since the scheme began in 2003. Great news, let’s keep it up. Just a quickie, I’ve been suffering with The Bug all week but today found something quite cool if you’re into Valentine’s Day.  Ethical Superstore will give 5p for every fair trade e-card sent from their site to the Fair Media Scholarship Fund. If you liked that post, then try these…Win free tickets & pamper session [...]

Green burials

Posted on 22 January 2007

According to an article in the Sunday Herald, everyone in Scotland will have the option of a green burial within 5 years. Native Woodland currently has three natural burial sites in Scotland and is keen to expand.  Glasgow City Council is also looking to have parts of its cemeteries given over to green burial, it [...]

Fresh as a daisy

Posted on 15 January 2007

This is where I admit one of my green weaknesses.  In my bathroom sit the following deodorants: PitRok (stick), Bionsen (roll-on) and Tom’s of Maine (stick).  But none of them are as effective as my Vaseline anti-perspirant.  For a while last year PitRok seemed to work well in combination with Weleda Wild Rose deodorant spray, [...]

Money-saving, the green way

Posted on 08 January 2007

It’s common to feel the pinch at this time of year, and the common thought of being green is that it is expensive, and, well, it can be. It can also be quite money saving if you are looking to reduce your consumption of energy and goods, and aiming to reuse and recycle what you [...]

Organic Burns Supper

Posted on 22 December 2006

Ok, we’ve just had the Solstice, Christmas is imminent, but in Scotland we need to plan for Burns Night on January 25th. If you’re in Inverness on Wednesday 24th January you can go to an organic supper, organised by the Soil Association Scotland and the Real Education Active Lives (REAL) Project at Inverness High School. [...]
