One of the things I like to do in my spare time (which is never these days!) is make bags, in fact I’m a bit of a bag obsessive. The way I like to make bags is to use fabric from clothes and other items that have been both loved and beautiful in their day but now its time to transform into something else, to recycle them. Remember my post on City Hippy about the plastic bag alternative? In fact one day I hope to spend more time on this and make it more than a hobby.
Someone who has managed to do this is Nicole from Nixie, not with bags but with children’s clothing. Nixie is dedicated to making exclusive clothing for children – the old fashioned way – but with environmental consciousness. Each design is produced in London by finely skilled seamstresses and the collection is principally made of 100% recycled wools, vintage cottons and 70’s print cottons, most of the garments one offs.
Created by Nicole Frobusch and inspired by her two daughters Ivy and Faye, Nixie is a unique, imaginative, modern version of everything that true “classics” should be. Nicole’s recipe for the Collection – bohemian style embraces 70’s flower power with a hint of fairytale.
Dubbed “The Children of the Revolution” by Iconique Magazine , Nixie pays respect to nature; making us think where our children’s clothes came from, and about the conditions under which they were produced.
I know I’ll be referring to Nixie for inspiration when my sewing machine next sees the light of day and their website is beautiful too. Check them out on www.nixieclothing.com
