New Year's Eve is fun, but don't be an environmental party-pooper when you celebrate. All those disposable party plates, napkins and decorations go straight from your overflowing trash can into landfills. So celebrate the New Year AND the planet by throwing an eco-friendly party! Then ring in 2010 with a recycled noisemaker you can create using items around your house.

You will need:
- a recyclable jar or container with lid
- scissors
- old newspaper, leftover wrapping paper, or scrap construction paper
- stickers, markers, or magazine cutouts
- glue or tape
- small objects: keys, bottle caps, marbles, or dried beans or kernels.
- ribbons, streamers, or glitter. (optional)

What to do:
1. Place the paper around the open container and cut to fit around the outside of it.
2. Write "Happy New Year" and "2010" on the paper. Then decorate it with stickers, markers, and magazine cutouts.
3. Glue or tape the paper to the container.
4. Attach ribbons or streamers to the lid of the container for some extra decoration.
5. Partially fill the container with small objects from the list of Things You Will Need. Put on the lid and tape it securely in place. Then get shaking!

Eco-Party Tips:

Drink sparkling cider from glasses instead of disposable cups.

Encourage your friends and family to share rides to your New Year's Eve party.

Hang Biodegradable Crepe Paper Streamers around your house.

Hi Arcadia,
Great ideas!
I'll be joining in on as many as I can.

In the last few weeks I've discovered low energy light bulbs are no where near as bad as I remember and they're gradually taking over at home - especially now the price has dropped so much :-)

Composting is the big one for us. We do so much cooking from scratch that the majority of my bin bag would be vegetable peelings or seeds. We've just moved to a rented house and aren't allowed a compost bin, so I'm getting a bokashi composting set-up and will be "donating" the contents to my parents' garden on a regular basis!

Hi Arcadia

Thank you for sharing your resolutions. I'm going to join you with a couple of them:

1) Get a bike and start using it
2) Use more eco-friendly cleaning products

I already do pretty well on the other things but those two are ones I need to make most effort in.
